What parents have to say about Mother Goose on the Loose®

Hi. I'm writing to let you all know how wonderful I think your kids' programs are. I have been attending since 2001, starting with my first child at Mother Goose on the Loose and then Terrific Twos; and repeating the programs for my second child. I find your programs to be refreshingly age-appropriate, a fact that was made even more apparent to me this summer, when my family and I were living in New Hampshire. We visited three different libraries regularly, one in Vermont and two in New Hampshire. None of the programs could compare to yours. They were all well-intentioned, of course, but the other librarians simply did not understand how a program needs to be age-appropriate. I am so glad that you are training other librarians in your successful methods. Thank you, and keep up the good work.

Caroline McKeldin Wayner

“Other programs have dance and music, but this is the only one where they are well integrated with the music."

Julie W., parent of Ziv

"It’s also an opportunity for children to interact and for parents to network or find one another. "

Tanya, mother of John, 6 months

"Parents aren’t skilled enough usually to know what to do. They learn it from the program by repetition, repeating many of the same things every week. I’m singing the nursery rhymes and doing the movements..."

Fiona M.

"I’m glad that there’s something like this that we can come to and that we can see other kids of all different ages and get the opportunity to play with different kinds of toys and experiment to see what he likes."

Karen, mother of Helen, age 3

“One of the things I found extremely important was, not only did it stimulate the children while you were there but as a new mother with a new child, it taught me how to play.”

Jess, mother of Tyler age 4 (a Mother Goose on the Loose graduate)

“Having the repertoire of songs... is a fantastic tool for long car trips. It has really saved us.”

Kevin, father of Fran

What works really well is the combination of the structured nursery rhymes, the predictable routine, the structure so you know your child is learning, the social time, and the ease of that space. The space is really important because you can breastfeed, you can have your child playing, you can talk with other mothers and fathers....It’s really important as a kind of social contact for mothers.

Lisa O’Connell

“Jeffrey verbalizes like a four year old, according to his pediatrician, and can read five words at the age of two. I think that MGOL has contributed a great deal to those abilities. He doesn’t go to preschool so I believe that it is coming from Mother Goose”.

Kirsten, mother of Jeffrey, 2 years

"The bottom line social thing is that Mother Goose attracts families to the library and then people begin to take better advantages of the facilities and advantages of the libraries. "

Deb, mother of Lisa, 10 months old

What librarians have to say about Mother Goose on the Loose®

Mother Goose on the Loose is perfection. It should be the benchmark/ touchstone for baby and toddler programming.

I liked the balance of theory/research with the practical how-to-do. I like the why and the how...the practical advice you gave based on experience was priceless.

Thanks again for MGOL--I got in late today, looked down at the schedule, oops, MG in 1/2 hour! Because of the 80/20 rule, really all I had to do was set up...and we had a lively crowd today, we even did scarves, which was a first for me! Thanks!!

Dear Dr. Diamant-Cohen/Betsy,

I've attended a number of workshops over the last four years pertaining to children and teens.  The workshop you conducted today at Haverford Library in Delaware County, PA was by far the best and most informative.  You have inspired me to try new and various techniques to engage the children in my story time programs.  You were knowledgable, articulate, enthusiastic, and entertaining!

I walked away today with a desire to start a  Mother Goose On The Loose program at my library immediately.  I know I can't start tomorrow but I feel as if you've given me the information and tools to be able to begin putting some aspects into effect now while practicing and preparing for the full program in the future.

I found watching you conduct an actual program for the children especially helpful.  To watch you with them was terrific.  How they responded and how you handled each situation was great to see first hand.

I did visit a couple of story times before I started four years ago.  I found them a little boring.   Even then, when I was a "newbie" I knew there had to be a better way to hold the children's attention while having them learn through a fun environment.  I've tried using shaker eggs, rhythm sticks, and music  but what you did today was 1,000 times better and worked beautifully.  I purchased both the cd's today and can't wait to start a MGOL program at my library.

Thank you for inspiring me and showing me a better way to conduct my early literacy programs.  The children are our future and I can only hope to help nurture them along the way.

This is Isabel Pinson writing.  I was one of the participants at the CJE workshop in January.

I had been, until January, singing the original dickey bird chant (loud and soft).  Then I added fast and slow.  Well, don't ask what went on all year with the different classes and this dickey bird rhyme!  One class spent time on this activity and came up with more rhymes (which I shared with the other classes) and as you know it is complicated -- rhyme and opposites together.  The teacher picked up on their interest and guided them.  One little boy from the mommy and me class would see me in the hallway or when he came to library would automatically put up his two fingers.  It really added to the enjoyment of our library time.

I also added the song "This is my house".  I was just amazed at how quickly the children picked up on this song and we only meet once a week!  They just loved it and I sang it in Hebrew with our Hebrew immersion class.

Again, thanks so much for these wonderful ideas.

The brain research was made concrete, memorable, and understandable.

The demonstrations emphasized positive emotions and sensory experiences. Such effective modeling will carry over...encouraging parents and caregivers in providing developmentally appropriate activties.

I have wanted to offer a training that combined early brain development research with programming for children two years and younger...it was worth the wait to find the two of you.

Heartfelt thanks to you and Regina for a fun and informative workshop.  I am so full of ideas, I cannot wait to have my first Mother Goose On the Loose story time.
